Following devastating flooding which struck Pakistan recently, with over 1,500 killed, 12,000 injured and 33 million people displaced, international NGO Human Appeal has partnered with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) to provide more lifesaving food assistance to those affected by this colossal humanitarian emergency.
Catastrophic floods have inundated over a quarter of the country. Southern and central Pakistan is most severely affected: Balochistan has seen 5.1 times its 30-year average rainfall, while Sindh has received 5.7 times its 30-year average rainfall. Due to this crisis and ensuing volatility across the region, access to food has become scarce, which risks entire communities into food scarcity.
Through Human Appeal’s field office in Pakistan, general food distribution has already begun throughout Dadu MirpurKhas, Thatta & Nosheroferoze, districts, one of the worst affected areas of the Sindh region. Under this joint effort Human Appeal will provide lifesaving assistance to over 30,000 displaced and submerged inhabitants and support the WFP’s wider relief efforts alongside other cooperating partners. Under this ongoing relief assistance, Human Appeal will also distribute specialised nutritious food to protect the most vulnerable, including pregnant & lactating women and children under the age of two years, across Dadu & Kamber Shahdadkot districts. Based on the initial assessments, it is estimated that almost 25% of the total caseload shall be accessed through boat operations which are still under water and have no access through any other means.
Human Appeal will continue to provide vital assistance under this current agreement until 31st December 2022, to continuously support displaced and submerged communities in Pakistan where homes, families, critical infrastructure and livelihoods have been severely disrupted by floodwaters.
Deputy CEO of Human Appeal, Owais Khan, comments, “The urgency of humanitarian aid cannot be emphasized enough. Having washed away roadways and livestock, already vulnerable communities are facing food scarcity, which threatens to devastate people’s lives further. By cooperating with the UN World Food Programme, Human Appeal is supporting providing critical support to highly vulnerable communities.”
